Mythology
Like the ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptians had a lot of gods and goddesses. To name them all would take a very long time so I will just tell you about the more important ones. The ruler of the gods was Ra, and Ra was the god of the sun and scarab beetles. Later I'll tell you a legend about him and his fellow gods and goddesses. Then there is Shu, the god of air, Nut, the goddesses of the sky, and Geb the god of the earth. Then there was Orisis the god of the earth, then later the god of the underworld, Set, the god of the dessert and storms, Isis the goddesses of motherhood, marriage as well as healing, And Nepathys thew goddess of death rites and rivers. Then there is also Horus the falcon god of pharos, Bes the protector god, Bast the goddess of cats, Hapi the god of the Nile, Hathor, the goddess of love, Khonsu, the god of the moon, Ma'at, the goddess of justice and order, Ptah, the god of creation, Sehkmet, the lion and fire goddess, and Thoth is the scribe god and the god of wisdom as well as many, many more. The story I am about to tell you is one of the most common story of the gods, so if you look it up, there may be different variations of it, but I will recount it as I remember it. First let me warn you that gods are born into many different lifes so on one part of the tale they may appear as siblings but then go to husban and wife, or mother and son.
In the Beginning there was only Ra, Shu, Nut and Geb. Shu was the father of Nut and Nut was married to Geb. Shu lifted Nut above Geb to brcome a canopy over him and for a time everything was peaceful. New gods and goddesses were born and everyone was happy, and Nut was going to have a baby. At first nothing happened untill one day Ra recived a prophacy that the child of Nut and Geb would one day over-power him and become the ruler. Ra decided that instead of accepting this, he would try his very hardest to prevent this from happening, because he liked being the king and did not want to give it up. He issued an order to Nut That she was not allowed to have the baby on any day or night of the year. Nut was furious, but one doesn't argue with the king so she quietly bided her time to come up with a plan. Her plan was to gamble with the moon god Khonsu, and every time he lost he had to give her some moonlight. It took awhile, but eventually she had enough moonlight to create 5 new days that she tagged on to the end of the year. She had a child on each day and to this day, in Egypt those 5 days are considered bad luck. Anyway she had one child for each day, and the children's names were Orsiris, Set, Horus, Isis, and Nepathys. Ra was furious about this, and he ordered Shu to spread himself in between Geb and Nut and to never again let them meet. But the deed was done, In a last resort to keep his position as king he made Orisis the king of the earth, Set, his 'right hand man', and Isis married Osiris, and Nepathys married Set.You may be wondering what happened to Horus, but just be patient. Isis, was happy for a while, but then she started desirering more for Orisris and herself, so clever Isis devised a plan. She sent a magical poisonous snake to bite Ra. Of course Ra couldn't die, but he suffered extreme pain, and Isis pretended to do everything she could to heal him, but in the end she told him that the only way she could cure him was for him to tell her his secret name. Every person/god in exitance has a secret name, and if one knew another's secret name, they could used the power of that name to force the other to do his/her bidding. Ra new what Isis's true intent was but there was nothing he could do, he had to tell her his name. And with the power of the name she cured him, but she also forced him to retire and make Osiris the king. This put Set into a fury! He was supposed to become the king after Ra. There was nothing he could do at the moment, so he quietly waited for the perfect moment to get his revenge, his hate growing with each day. Meanwhile Osiris and Isis had a new baby boy, Horus. One day, when Horus was still young Set appeared at the palace and challenged Osiris To a game there are many variations on this part and i cant get a clear answer, but all you need to know is that Set defeated him and sent him to the underworld. Orisis remaned there and became the king of the under world. a that was left was for set to get his revenge on Isis. He shot a blast of magic at Isis and the little Horus, but Nepathys, who was watching couldn't bear to see her sister get hurt, threw her self in the way of Set's blast allowing Isis and Horus enough time to get away. Nepathys and Isis trained Horus until he was strong enough to challenge Set. Long story short, It was a very long battle but in the end Horus won, claimed his father's throne, and became the king of the gods. The end.
