Itinerary
Mesopotamia is the "land between the rivers" of the Tigris and Euphrates, and one of the earliest civilizations in the Western World. It has many wonderful sites to see.
For those of you travelling to Mesopotamia that would like a guided tour, oh boy, do we have something special for you!
The tour starts in Akkad, the capital of the Akkadian Empire, the key city in Mesopotamia at the end of the third millennium BCE. After your long journey through time and space you'll probably be tired and want to relax. A staff member will escort you to a little house built Mesopotamian style, but don't worry, it has all the comforts of a modern home inside, it just looks like a hut! Inside the resort we have many things to help you relax and you get one complementary massage on arriving, to those who visit our deluxe day time spa. But not all of our time will be spent in the resort, you will actually go out and see the real Mesopotamia.
The next day at around 6:00-10:30 you can all head down to the restaurant to have breakfast. We have all the modern cuisine as well as some traditional dishes from Mesopotamia, for those of you daredevils! At 10:40 the will be a little lesson in the courtyard about how o behave in Mesopotamia and what to expect. Then you'll be paired up with your guide and given some traditional clothes to wear and you'll head on your way out. The first day will be all about being street smart and learning the tricks of Mesopotamia and finding your way around. At around 1:30 the guide will take you to see a few of the popular sites in Akkad. At 3:00 you'll start making your way back by traveling through the bazaar. Today will be just a quick visit, just passing through kinda thing, so there won't be much shopping but you'll go back to the bazaar in Uruk, don't worry. Dinner is from 4:45-8:45 back at the resort and we have a huge arcade, a bar/lounge, a swimming pool/water park, a casino, a maze, and a huge play area for kids.
The curfew for anyone under 16 is 11:30 and anyone under drinking age will NOT be allowed in the bar, NO EXCEPTIONS. Anyone under gambling age will not be allowed in the casino, even with a legal guardians consent. There will be consequences for people who break the rules.
The next day you'll have to wear the clothes we gave you again because you are going to visit the temples and learn about the religion of Mesopotamia from your guide from the day before. After learning about the gods you will create a guardian god for yourself and the god/goddess will watch over you in Mesopotamia. This will take all day so after you finish visiting the last temple you will head home on the back of a donkey as it was one of the most popular to transport goods. When you reach home, there will be a demonstration of bread making, were you'll get to make traditional Mesopotamian bread, in the conference room for anyone interested.
The next day we head to Babylon...an Akkadian city-state founded in 1894 BC by an Amorite dynasty. It was once considered the holy city of Mesopotamia. The first day begins at 7:00 to prepare for an 8:00pm for a hot air balloon ride to the famous temple of Marduk, which was considered to be the foundation of heaven and earth. Om sure you've also heard of one of the seven wonders of the world, the hanging gardens of King Nebuchadnezzar. He made the garden for his wife Amytas, to help her with her home sickness. Staying on the King Nebuchadnezzar's theme, we will also see King Nebachadenzzar the II's winter and summer palaces, which are a must see if you're going to Babylon. Then we'll head to the cruise ship that will take us down the Euphrates river to Uruk. The cruise will take over night.
From there you will sail down the Euphrates river to Uruk, an ancient city of Sumer and later Babylonia. Uruk was the site for many innovations, the most important was writing. You will get to explore the city by your self today. We will be doing an entire ship cleaning today so you must be off the ship by 11:00. You must be back on the ship by 7:30, and the earliest you may come back is 3:30. if you get lost, don't worry, we'll give you your own, personal pigeon, for that day only, trained to return with a message if needed. If you lose or break the pigeon you will be charged the cost of a new pigeon. There will be an evening seminar the night before for anyone wanting information on the care and feeding of messenger pigeons. There are bazaars all over the place so feel free to shop as much as you like.
We'll cruise a few more days stopping at occasional sites and finish at Eridu, long considered the earliest city in southern Mesopotamia, and is still today argued to be the oldest city in the world. We will spend one day at Eridu and then send you back home to your time. In Sumerian mythology, Eridu was originally the home of Enki, who was considered to have founded the city, later known by the Akkadians as Ea. We will see the great temple of Enki, and there you will here the legend that is of Enki, but I won't spoil it for you. As well, we have now confirmed thorugh our time travels that the Tower of Babel really was in Eridu, and you will have a chance to climb it's many staircases. In the afternoon, Eridu, is a truly wonderful city, so we`ll let you explore it at your own pace and time. Once you're done you`ll spend your final night in Mesopotamia on the cruise ship and there will be a lyre musician playing on the sky deck.
A separate tour through the Persian Gulf, available for travelers wishing to extend their time in the past, departs every Tuesday from Eridu.
